Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State volleyball team opened conference play with a win against Miami on Friday, Sept. 14, on Lucy McDaniel Court. The Seminoles, now 4-5 on the season, swept the Hurricanes 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 30-22) in front of a crowd of over 850 in Tully Gym.
“It’s a big win for us tonight,” head coach Todd Kress said. “We needed to take the right step after the preseason and our preseason schedule was very tough, but I thought it prepared us for tonight. We took advantage tonight of a big crowd and put on a good show.”
The Seminoles averaged a .223 attack percentage on 94 attempts for the match, while Miami finished with .011 on 88 attempts.
Leading FSU once again was junior Mira Djuric (Belgrade, Serbia) with 13 kills, five service aces and 18 points. Djuric’s back-to-back aces secured the win in game one and brought her season total to 30.
Senior Makini Thompson (Quincy, Mass.) had a solid night with seven kills, two blocks and eight points and sophomore Jackie BonSalle (Albuquerque, N.M.) also had seven kills and added seven points to the board.
Moving closer to breaking the Florida State record for career digs was Summer Weissing (Boca Raton, Fla.) with 10 against Miami. The senior libero leads the garnet in gold in that category with 129 so far this season.
“It feels really good to have the first ACC win under our belt,” Weissing said. “We came out tonight really aggressive with our serving. You definitely have to win the first one to build momentum for the season and it feels great to have won tonight.”
Next up, the Seminoles head to Virginia to take on Virginia and Virginia Tech on Sept. 20 and 21, respectively. The next home match will be Sept. 28 against the Duke Blue Devils.
