Number one seed Chris Cloer (Brevard, NC), three seed Bobby Deye (Naples, FL), four seed Andrew Bailey (Tallahassee, FL) and Michael O’Shea (Boca Raton, FL) all defeated their first round opponents Monday morning.
Cloer, the tournaments top seed dispatched first round opponent Bill Rockwood in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 and said, “I felt like I played pretty good, the first match is always the toughest.” Cloer’s next match will be Tuesday at 9 a.m. with his opponent yet to be determined.
Bailey, Deye and O’Shea were also straight set winners putting the first four Seminoles on the court into the second round. Number two seed Bradley Mixson (Miami, FL) won his match in straight sets and Jason Hood (Columbia, SC) by walkover when his opponent forfeited their match.
All six Seminoles were successful on the double court as well. Cloer teamed with Hood to form the number one seed and won 8-5, while two seeds Mixson and Bailey won their match 8-4. Closing out the clean sweep was Deye and O’Shea, the three seeds won 8-2. In a unique twist, teammates will be opponents on Tuesday when Mixson and Bailey take on Deye and O’Shea in one afternoon doubles semifinal. Coming into the tournament all six Noles knew this would be a possibility. Cloer said, “Coming in here the number one seed is a big deal, I’m hoping to play Brad or another one of our guys.”
