VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. –The No. 2 Florida State men’s golf team is tied for second after playing two rounds on Monday at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. Junior Hank Lebioda is tied for first with two others at 6-under par. The Seminoles tee off the third round at 8:50 a.m. CT on Tuesday from the first hole.
In the first round at the Old Overton Country Club, the Seminoles struggled with a 10-over 290. Florida State bounced back in the second round with a 7-under 273 with a total of 24 birdies. The defending national championships and host school Alabama has a 10 stroke lead with a 7-under while No. 5 Georgia Tech is tied with Florida State.
“This team showed me a lot today,” said head coach Trey Jones. “We did not execute well on our back nine this morning. Starting on the back in the afternoon we did a great job of putting the previous nine behind us and got off to a great start. I like our progression over the last three weeks and look for us to continue to improve.”
Lebioda turned in a 6-under 134 today and is tied with Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech and Ben Wood of Mississippi State in the top spot. Lebioda posted an outstanding 8-under on par four holes today. His best round of the day came in the afternoon with a 66.
“Hank had a great week of preparation and carried it on to today,” continued Jones. “He is leading the tournament and playing with the top two amateurs and collegiate players in the country tomorrow. I am looking forward to seeing how comfortable he is in this environment.”
Sophomore Anthony Alex had a 1-under 69 in the second round to propel him 10 spots into a tie for 10th place. With a 1-over 141 for the tournament, his 69 marks his lowest round in college.
“Anthony played better today than his final score indicated,” finished Jones. “He made two mistakes that cost him four shots. He is not far off from shooting a low number.”
Junior Rowin Caron and sophomore Josh Lee are both tied for 23rd with a 4-over 144. Lee posted a 77 in the first round to bounce back with a 67 in the afternoon and moved up 22 spots while Caron posted a 73 and 71 on the day.
Sophomore Jack Maguire is tied for 43rd with a 9-over 149. He posted a 71 in the second round for an eight shot improvement compared to the first.
