Seminoles To Face Northwestern In ACC/Big Ten Challenge

June 19, 2001

TALLAHASEE, Fla –
The Florida State University men’s basketball team faces Northwestern in the third annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge Nov. 28 in Evanston, Ill. The game between the Seminoles and the Wildcats is set for a 9:30 p.m. start and will be televised nationally on ESPN2.

This is the first game of the Seminoles’ 2001-02 schedule to be announced. The remainder of the schedule should be finalized in August.

Florida State won two of its final three games, defeated NCAA Tournament Final Four Participant Maryland (which was ranked No. 4 in the final ESPN/USA Today poll) and displayed the elements of having developed into the most improved team in the Atlantic Coast Conference by the end of the 2001-02 season. The Seminoles defeated two NCAA Tournament teams during the final month of the season and lost two other games to nationally ranked teams by a combined total of nine points.

Northwestern finished with an 11-19 overall record and were 3-13 in the Big Ten during the 2000-01 season. The Wildcats lost to Clemson, 57-44, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge last season and are 0-2 in challenge play. Rising junior Winston Blake led the team with an 11.9 points per game average last season.

Florida State defeated Northwestern, 60-46, Dec. 1, 1999 during the inaugural ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Delvon Arrington scored 12 points and added 12 assists as the Seminoles were victorious at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Florida State made its first seven shots in racing out to a 31-17 halftime advantage. The Seminoles shot 50 percent from the floor while holding the Wildcats to 31 percent shooting.

The Challenge will feature three of last year’s NCAA Final Four (Duke, Maryland, Michigan State), the past two NCAA Champions, Duke (2001) and Michigan State (2000), and only the second meeting between Indiana and North Carolina since 1988.
