Seminoles Tough to Beat in Singles

Jan. 21, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. –  Through two dual matches and a tournament, the No. 38 Florida State women’s tennis team remains unbeaten in singles after turning in a perfect showing at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

“Going undefeated and not dropping a set in singles this semester says a lot about this team,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said.  That statement speaks about their performances thus far.”

The Seminoles were 14-0 on the weekend in singles, moving to 24-0 on the year. In addition to its perfect singles weekend, Florida State has yet to give up a set this season.

Sophomore Daneika Borthwick (No.37) held off Ruth Seaborne in the first set before wearing her down in the second, securing a 6-4, 6-0 victory, moving to a 12-4 record on the year.

Playing next to Borthwick, No. 48 Mia Vriens captured her 13th victory of the season as she defeated Shelby Talcott 6-3, 6-3.

Senior Francesca Segarelli (No. 73) got out in front early and defeated Katie Zordani with a 6-3, 6-3 showing. Segarelli is 12-7 on the year.

Working on the fourth court, Junior Kristina Schleich had no trouble in the first set before battling from behind to take the second and the match 6-2, 6-4. Schleich is 8-2 at the start of her Seminole career.

The Seminoles started off the day with doubles against UCF.  Vriens and Schleich pulled away in their match to defeat Sophia Baptista and Jenna Doerfler, 8-4.  However, on court one, senior Amy Sargeant Borthwick fell to Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson , 8-6.

“Our goal for these first few weeks was to get a lot of matches under our belts before the ITA Kickoff Weekend, “Hyde said. “The girls are not letting up on court and they’re playing complete matches. That’s exactly what we needed to see heading into our upcoming matches this weekend, starting with Baylor on Saturday.”

Florida State will gear up for the ITA-Kickoff Weekend on Saturday when they face No. 15 Baylor in Waco, Tx. Depending on the outcome of the match, the Seminoles will play either No. 21 Texas Tech or No. 29 Rice. Check back to Seminoles.com, Twitter and Facebook for more information.
