TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State, which finished in 10th place in the team standings at the fall season opening GolfWeek Challenge, travels to play in the 16th Annual Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championships at the Holston Hill Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn., Oct. 12-14, 2012. It marks the Seminoles’ first appearance in the event which began in 1997 and has seen nine different team champions – including three by Duke of the ACC (1997, 1998, 2000) – during the illustrious history of the event. The Seminoles earned their first top 10 finish of the Fall 2012 season as they opened the three-match season at the GolfWeek Challenge.

Florida State is joined by No. 4 Purdue, No. 12 Northwestern, No. 15 Iowa State, No. 22 Texas A&M, No. 23 Tennessee, No. 28 Texas San Antonio, East Carolina, Eastern Kentucky, Furman, James Madison, Memphis, Miami, Mississippi State, Penn State and Tennessee Chattanooga in the 16th Annual Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championships. The event will be played at the Par 72, 6,447 yard Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Alabama won the team championship and the Crimson Tide’s Stephanie Meadow won the individual championship in 2011.
CASTELAIN LEADS SEMINOLES AT SEASON OPENING GOLFWEEK CHALLENGE
Sophomore Laure Castelain finished as Florida State’s leader and in a tie for 28th place in the individual standings at the fall season opening GolfWeek Challenge. It marked the third time in her 10-match career that she has finished at the top of the Seminoles’ leaderboard. Castelain has also finished as Florida State’s leader at the Fall 2011 Susie Maxwell Berning Classic at the University of Oklahoma and at the Spring 2012 Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia.
NEGRON COMES ALIVE IN FINAL ROUND OF GOLFWEEK CHALLENGE
Senior Jessica Negron, who earned East Regional All-American honors in 2011, finished with a team leading 71 in the final round of the GolfWeek Challenge. Her score in the final round moved her into the top 50 in the final standings and marked the 10th time in her career that she has carded a score of 71 or better.
KUHLO PLAYS WELL AT GOLFWEEK CHALLENGE
Sophomore Carlton Kuhlo tied her career best for a single round score (74 in the first round) and a three-round tournament (229 for a 76.33 average) in finishing in a tie for 39th place at the GolfWeek Challenge. Kuhlo’s finish at the GolfWeek Challenge was the second best individual finish and the second top 40 finish of her career.
HULLERT PLAYS WELL IN HER FIRST COLLEGIATE EVENT
Freshman Olivia Hullert played well in the GolfWeek Challenge — her first collegiate event – and earned her way into the line-up for this week’s Mercedes Benz Collegiate Championship. She led the Seminoles in the second round with her career best score of 75 and began her career with a 152 total for the first 36 holes of her career (77-75).
SAVAGE NAMED ASSISTANT COACH
Matt Savage, one of the top golfers in Seminole history, has been named an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s golf programs at Florida State. He earned All-American honors in 2007, was the first player in school history to earn All-ACC honors three times, played on one NCAA Championship final and four NCAA Regional Championship teams and led the Seminoles to the first ACC Championship in school history in 2008. Savage closed his career in 2009 with a 73.09 scoring average in 44 career tournaments – the fifth best average in school history. Savage will work with both the nationally ranked Seminole men’s and women’s programs in the areas of skill development, recruiting, practice planning and match coaching.
