TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
The Florida State women’s golf team, which has earned two top three team finishes in its first two events of the spring, travels to play in the 2014 SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational March 14-16, 2014 at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. The Seminoles have earned top three team finishes in their most recent two events with a second place finish at the Florida Challenge to open the spring season and a third place finish at the Seminole-hosted Florida State Match-Up at SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee. Florida State plays its third of six regular season tournaments this spring at the Lady Gator.
THE 2014 SUNTRUST LADY GATOR INVITATIONAL
No. 36 Florida State is joined by No. 8 Oklahoma, No. 10 Arizona, No. 17 Florida, Furman, Kent State, Miami, Ohio State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Texas A&M, USF, Texas San Antonio and Virginia in the 42nd Annual SunTrust Lady Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida. The event will run consecutively over three days with 18 holes played on each day on the Par 70, 6002 yard course which has played host to the event since 1973. Alabama won the team championship in 2013 with Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma winning the individual championship. Jao-Javanil won the championship with a 4-under par score of 206 and returns as a member of Oklahoma’s line-up to defend her title in 2014.
SEMINOLES HAVE EARNED SUCCESS AT THE LADY GATOR
The Seminole women’s golf team has earned a great deal of success during the strong history of the Lady Gator Invitational. The Seminoles have won the Lady Gator team championship twice – in 1980 and 1995 and have claimed two of the last three individual championships. Maria Salinas, who graduated with a degree in international affairs from Florida State in 2012, claimed the individual title while leading the Florida State to a third place finish in the team standings at the 2012 Lady Gator Invitational. Hannah Thomson won the individual title in 2011 in leading the Seminoles to a second place team finish in 2011.
SEMINOLES’ CASTREN NAMED ACC GOLFER OF THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY
Seminole freshman Matilda Castren, who won the individual title and led the Seminoles to a third place finish at the Florida State Match-Up, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Golfer of the Month for February. Castren won the first individual championship of her career at the Florida State Match-Up, finishing a career-best 10 under par. The first-year Seminole set personal records for single round scores with a 68 in both the first and second rounds. Her three-round tournament score (206) and number of strokes under par (10) were also personal bests. Castren is 11 strokes under par in five rounds played during the Spring 2013 season.
MILAN PLAYING THE BEST GOLF OF HER CAREER
Junior Alex Milan, who won in the individual championship at the Spring 2014 Florida Challenge, enters the Lady Gator Invitational, playing the best golf of her career. She is averaging a career best 74.82 strokes in 15 rounds during six events in her third season as a Seminole. Milan is averaging nearly three strokes per round fewer this year as compared to her sophomore year (74.82 vs. 77.50) and more than three strokes fewer this season as compared to her freshman season (74.82 vs. 78.20).
ONLY THREE SEMINOLES HAVE BEEN IN LINE-UP FOR ALL SEVEN EVENTS
Junior Alex Milan and freshmen Lydia Gumm and Anna Sophia Böhmer are the only three players who have been in the Seminoles’ starting line-up for all seven events during the fall 2013 and spring 2014 seasons.
FLORIDA STATE BUILDING UP TOP-10 FINISHES
Florida State’s line-up in this weekend’s Lady Gator Invitational has earned a total of 10 top-10 individual finishes during their careers. Freshman Matilda Castren has earned four career top-10 finishes (tied for eighth, Lady Paladin Invitational, Fall 2013; tied for eighth, Schooner Fall Classic, Fall 2013; tied for second, Florida Challenge, Spring 2014; first, Florida State Match-Up, Spring 2014), junior Laure Castelain has earned three top-10 finishes (tied for third, Susie Maxwell Classic, Fall 2011; tied for ninth, Bryan National Collegiate, Spring 2012; tied for 10, Florida State Match-Up, Spring 2014), sophomore Alex Milan has earned two top-10 finishes (tied for third, Florida Challenge, Spring 2013; first, Florida Challenge, Spring 2014) and freshman Anna Sophia Böhmer has finished in the top-10 once during the first year of her career (tied for fifth, Florida Challenge, Spring 2014).
SEMINOLES TO HOST 2014 NCAA EAST REGIONAL
Florida State will play host to the NCAA East Regional Championship as part of the NCAA Division I Women’s Golf Championship May 8-10, 2014 at Southwood Golf Club in Tallahassee.
