GREENSBORO, N.C. (seminoles.com) – Led by a 1-under par 70 from senior Maria Salinas, the Florida State women’s golf team reversed its fortunes completely as it played the best team round of the day and moved into third place in the team standings after two rounds of the 24th Annual ACC Championship at Sedgefield Country Club. The Seminoles began the second round in a tie for eighth place; they begin play in Sunday’s third and final round in third place.

No. 8 ranked Duke continued to hold the lead as it plays for its first ACC title in the sport of women’s golf since 2008. The Blue Devils have won a record 16 ACC title since their first in 1984. Lindy Duncan of Duke, the nation’s No. 1 ranked player leads the individual standings with a four under par total of 138. She holds a fiver stroke lead over teammate Alejendra Cangrejo and a seven stroke lead over Salinas of Florida State.

The Seminoles were once again at their best at the end of the round as they made up four strokes on the final four holes of the round. The Seminoles totaled one eagle and five birdies coming in to close the round. In addition, the four players who counted their scores during the round (Salinas, Jessica Negron, Laure Castelain and Hannah Thomson) were a cumulative total of even par on the back nine of the course.

“We played much more like Florida State today as compared to yesterday,” said head coach Amy Bond. “The girls put their shots in sports where they could take advantage and make birdies. I was very pleased with their overall performance today and am really looking forward to see how they finish this tournament.”

Salinas (Lima, Peru), who is in a tie for third place in the individual standings, was spectacular throughout the round with four birdies and 15 holes at par or better in earning her best single round score in a conference tournament during her career. She was one under par with eight holes at par or better and two birdies on her front nine and even par with seven holes at par or better with two birdies on her back nine. Salinas was as many as three strokes under par and was never above par during the round.

“I feel like I played a smarter round as compared to my play in the first round,” said Salinas. “I hit the ball well and put myself in good position to make birdies.”

Salinas is looking to earn her second top 10 finish in the ACC Championship (she finished in a tie for 10th place in 2010) and her third career top 10 finish in a conference tournament (she finished in a tie for third in the Southern Conference Tournament in 2009).

Negron (Ocala, Fla.) is in a tie for sixth place after finishing with a 1-over par score of 72 in the second round. She improved her score by four strokes as compared to her first round score and has a two round total of 148. Negron helped herself immensely as she carded a eagle three on the par five 15th hole to pick up two strokes on her score. Her eagle allowed her to return her score to par; she finished with a 1 over par score of 72.

Negron is looking for her first top five finish in her third career ACC Championship after finishing in a tie for 11th in 2011 and in in a tie for 25th in 2010.

Freshman Laure Castelain(Bordeaux, France) improved her score by seven strokes as she carded a 2-over par of 73. She is in a tie for 22nd place in the individual standings with a 153 total for the first two rounds.

Florida State will play for a top three finish in the team standings of the ACC Championship Sunday when it tees off with Duke and North Carolina at 9:40 a.m. The Seminoles will be looking for their first top three team finish since the 2008 season. The Seminoles finished in a school best second place in the ACC championship in 1992, 1995 and 1999.
