Feb. 26, 2008

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico –
Florida State All-American Caroline Westrup finished in sixth place in the individual standings and the Seminole women’s golf team finished in 10th place in the team standings as competition in the Lady Puerto Rico Women’s Golf Classic at the Coco Beach Golf and Country Club was completed on Tuesday. Westrup earned the 13th top-10 finish of her career as she placed as the Seminoles’ top finishing golfer for the 19th time in 21 events during her Seminole career.

Alabama rallied from fourth place and four strokes down entering the third round to claim the team championship with a three stroke victory over Louisiana State. The Crimson Tide carded the best team score of the final round to vault itself into first place. All-American and defending NCAA Champion Stacy Lewis led the event wire-to-wire to capture the individual championship with an eight-under par total of 208.

Westrup (Ahus, Sweden) finished in sixth place with a one-over par score of 217 for the 54-hole event. She was three-under par after the first two rounds of the event after carding scores of 70 and 71 on the par 72 course. Westrup’s sixth place finish was her best since finishing in a tie for fifth place in the individual standings at 2007 NCAA East Regional Championships.

Seminole freshman Macarena Silva (Santiago, Chile) played very consistent golf through the event as she finished with scores of 75-75-76 for a career-low three-round total of 216. She established career-bests for low tournament score (216) and highest finish (tied for 34th) while carding two scores at 75 or better during the 54-hole event.

Senior Whitney Brummett (Eureka, Mo.) finished the event with a four-over par score of 76 and a three-round total of 231. Her score of 76 was tied for third round-best honors among her teammates. Brummett finished in a tie for 60th place in the individual standings with teammate Lacey Agnew. Agnew (Jonesboro, Ga.) carded identical scores of 76 in the first and second rounds. Senior Whitney Wright (Rockingham, N.C.) finished as the Seminoles’ third highest ranking player as she finished with a three-day total of 230.

Florida State continues its schedule as it travels to play at the UCF Challenge on March 9-11 at the Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla.
