Tallahassee, FL – The Florida State women’s tennis team (14-4, 4-0) bettered last season’s conference and season win total, beating Wake Forest, 6-1 in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Sunday, March 21, 2004. The Seminoles went 13-10 overall and 3-5 in the conference.
In doubles, the Tribe swept all three doubles matches. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) and freshman Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) won at the number one position defeating Wake’s tandem of Davis/Schwartz, 8-4. At the two spot, senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) and sophomore Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) won, taking the match from Martzolf/Smith, 8-3. FSU rounded out the doubles area with a victory from senior duo Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) and Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bradenton Academy) over Coetzee/Proctor, 8-4.
The Seminoles took five of six singles matches, securing the team win over the Demon Deacons. Dumitrescu bested Ashlee Davis, playing out of the number one position, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Moldovan, playing out of the number two position, won her 18th singles match of the season over Liz Proctor, 6-3, 6-1. Denny won her 15th match of the season in a victory over Katie Martzolf, in the three slot, 6-2, 7-5.
In the number four and five positions, Deason and Clarke took Aimee Smith and Danielle Schwartz to three sets to pick up wins against Aimee Smith and Danielle Schwartz. Clarke won 5-7, 6-3, 6-0 while Deason posted a tally of 7-5, 1-6, 7-6(7).
Junior Amberly Tantee (Dana Point, CA/Futures) lost at the number six position to Sandie Knight, 6-3, 6-1.
