Senior Day Showdown

Jan. 14, 2011

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.- The Florida State swimming and diving team will host its final home meet of the season on Saturday, January 15, at the Bobby E. Leach Center. The Seminoles will square-off against ACC foe Clemson at 11:00 a.m., on senior day.

“We’ve been training hard and doing what we need to do to get ready for the conference meet,” head coach Neil Harper said. “We’ll be swimming a couple of different events this week and it’s the last meet for our seniors so I’m excited for them.”

The Seminoles and Tigers have engaged in several tight dual meets the past two seasons. Last year the Garnet and Gold escaped Clemson with a pair of victories and look to get the same result in 2011. The men hold a 14-4 all-time record against the Tigers while the women are 9-4-1.

“Clemson is a dangerous opponent,” Harper said. “They are a team that has some talent and is out to prove a point.”

Before the meet, Florida State will honor its 13 seniors who will swim in front of the home crowd for the last time. While there are still major goals ahead for the senior class, this meet offers a time of reflection for both the coaches and athletes.

“This has been a great senior class that has been so valuable all four years,” Harper said. “For the most part this group shows up on the ACC Honor Roll and the Dean’s List year in and year out. I’m really proud that they have chosen to lead our team this way.”

Both the men’s and women’s teams picked up where they left off last weekend sweeping Georgia Tech and UNC-Wilmington. Junior swimmer Stephanie Sarandos and freshman diver Kelsey Goodman led the `Noles to victory, with the two combining for five event wins. For the men, it was senior Rob Holderness sweeping the breaststroke events and freshman Tom Neubacher, who topped the 400 point mark on the three-meter board, who paced FSU.

As always, admission is free and Seminole fans should be on the lookout in the stands for rally towels being distributed by the marketing staff. For a meet recap and complete results make sure you visit www.seminoles.com after the meet.
