Tallahassee, Fla. – Senior Dennis Guinn was named ACC Player of the Week as he led the Seminole offense to a four-game sweep over then undefeated Auburn. The conference honor is the second in as many weeks for a Seminole student-athlete as freshman Mike McGee was honored in week one. This is the second time in Guinn’s career that he has been named ACC Player of the Week.
The senior first baseman led Florida State this past week in hits (9), RBIs (6), home runs (3) and slugging percentage (1.188), while tying the team lead in runs scored with six in FSU’s four-game sweep of the Tigers.
In game one of the Seminoles first road game of the season, Guinn was the difference maker as his two-run homer in the top of the eighth gave FSU a three-run cushion at 7-4. The Seminole first baseman had the green light on a 3-0 offering in the eighth inning taking the pitch over the 30 foot wall in left field. The senior from Haines City, Fla., was a triple short of hitting for the cycle as he collected three RBIs, scored twice and made nine putouts at first base. In the second game, Guinn was effective with two hits in his first three at-bats in helping FSU to the two-game road sweep.
As the Seminoles returned home for game three of the series, Guinn remained hot collecting hits in his first two at-bats including a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the second to give Florida State a 2-0 advantage. He then registered an RBI single in the third to give FSU a three-run lead. In the fourth and final game, Guinn continued his torrid hitting with two hits in his final at-bats of the series with a single to left and a two-out solo home run on a 2-2 count in the sixth. Guinn hit home runs in back-to-back games and recorded three for the series. He also was perfect from the field in 38 opportunities at first base registering 34 putouts and four assists.
With four home runs in 2008, Guinn is just one home run shy of tying his total output from last year while he entered his senior campaign with 17 career home runs to his name.
The Seminoles return to the diamond on Tuesday, March 4 as they host UNC Asheville for a two-game series. First pitch on Tuesday is set for 6:00 pm. Florida State will then open ACC play on Friday as the Seminoles welcome Maryland to Dick Howser Stadium for a three-game set. Friday and Saturday’s games will be played at 6:00 pm, while Sunday’s game is scheduled for a 12 noon first pitch.
