TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team will travel to Greenville, S.C. this weekend to compete in the 25th annual Furman Fall at the Mickel Tennis Center, hosted by Furman University. The tournament will feature eight highly talented teams in a flighted competition format.
The Seminoles will compete in doubles and singles matches against players from Clemson, UNC, Alabama, Furman, South Carolina, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The field includes 21 singles players and 11 doubles teams that are listed in the preseason ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings. With the exception of the host team Furman, each team finished last season in the ITA rankings.
Three Seminoles are set to make their debuts. In singles, freshmen Mia Vriens (Sydney, Australia) will begin with a test on Friday when she faces No. 32 Keri Wong from Clemson in flight one of singles. Leyla Erkan (Hilton Head, S.C.), another freshman will face Alabama’s Taylor Lindsey in the fourth singles flight. Junior Carolina De los Santos (Monteviedo, Uruguay) will play No. 66 Chelsea Preeg out of Vanderbilt in the fifth flight.
No. 40 Junior Noemie Scharle (Colmar-Berg, Luxembourg) will play in the second flight against Furman’s Katherine Oudin and Junior Francesca Segarelli (Rome, Italy) will face No. 68 Dijana Stojic fron South Carolina in the flight three.
In doubles play, De los Santos and Vriens will team up and dual in the first flight against Vanderbilt’s Jackie Wu and Lauren Mira. Erkan and Scharle will represent the Seminoles in the second flight against the No. 28 team of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti from Tennessee.
Doubles play will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, followed by singles action at 1 p.m. Play will continue on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 9 a.m. each day. Check back on Seminoles.com and Twitter (@fsu_wtennis) for more updates throughout the weekend.
