Seven FSU Athletes Qualify for NCAA Indoors

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Seven Florida State track & field athletes have
qualified for the 1999 NCAA Indoor Championships to be held this weekend in
Indianapolis, IN. They will leave Thursday with preliminary competition
beginning Friday afternoon.




For the women, Tonya Carter qualified in the 60m dash with a time
of 7.36 in a second place effort at the ACC Indoor Championships. That
places her at No. 13 on the NCAA performance list heading into Friday’s
action. The women’s 4x400m team of Laura Gerber, Samantha George, Chinette
Johnson and Fiona Norwood recorded their qualifying time of 3:39.04 at the
Cyclone Classic (third place). They currently stand ninth in the country
in the event.




The men are led by pole vaulter Jason Dean and thrower Joseph
Lawrence. Dean ranks 15th nationally in the pole vault at 17-4.50, a mark
he reached while winning the ACC Indoor title. Lawrence, the ACC record
holder in the weight throw, checked in at 65-2.25. He also recorded his
qualifying mark winning an ACC Championship and has the No. 16 throw in the
nation.




Also of note, Florida State had ten athletes earn All-ACC
recognition. They are: Carter (60m – 2nd), Makiba Batten (shot put –
2nd), W 4x400m (Gerber, George, Johnson, Norwood – 1st), Dean (pole vault –
1st), Darius Jones (long jump – 1st), Mario Lowe (triple jump – 2nd) and
Lawrence (weight throw – 1st/ACC record).


FSU’s NCAA Indoor Championship schedule:

Women’s 60m dash – prelims Fri. @ 4:55 p.m., finals Sat. @ 7:05 p.m.

Women’s 4x400m – prelims and finals Sat. @ 7:55 p.m.

Men’s pole vault – prelims and finals Sat. @ 5:30 p.m.

Men’s weight throw – prelims and finals Sat. @ 6:20 p.m.




Results will be available Friday and Saturday evening following
FSU’s final event of the day.
