Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State track and field team ends the 2004-05 season with the USA Junior and Senior Track and Field Championships at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., from June 23-26, 2005.
Five student-athletes will compete on the senior level while two are considered junior status. The top three from each event will earn a spot on the national team and a chance to compete at the IAAF World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
Junior LaToya Legree (Lithonia, Ga./Stephenson) and rookie Heather Leblanc (Live Oak, Fla./Suwannee) will represent the women’s team while redshirt freshmen Beau Burroughs (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Jesuit) and All-Americans rookie and NCAA 100m National Champion Walter Dix (Coral Springs, Fla./Coral Springs), redshirt sophomore Garrett Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Baptist), and junior Rafeeq Curry (Miami, Fla./ACE Academy) are entered on the men’s side.
Dix is wrapping up a freshman campaign in which he won the 2005 NCAA 100m Outdoor National Championship and earned five All-American honors in sprinting events. The ACC Indoor and Outdoor Rookie of the Year is seeded third in the 100m and seventh in the 200m in his second outing against a field comprised of professionals.
Curry, the ACC and NCAA East Region Triple Jump Champion, has the ninth best mark of the year for eligible Americans and the second highest among attached collegians entered in the competition. He attained a distance of 53’9.75″ (16.40m) during the finals of the triple jump at the national meet.
Johnson, the NCAA East Regional Champion in the shot put and discus, also sits at number nine in the shot put (66’0.5″/20.13m) and eighth in the discus event (199’4″/60.77m). Both are career-best throws and the shot put mark is an FSU all-time best.
