Signee Breakdown: Maguire

Feb. 10, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — If everything goes to plan, Florida State will start the 2012 college football season with an abundance of talent at quarterback. How much talent? Six scholarship-athletes worth.

While Jameis Winston will have a decision to make this summer about his  future depending on when he hears his name called during Major League Baseball’s draft, fellow signee Sean Maguire will definitely join FSU’s football program in time for the start of summer classes on July.

And even though it’s more than likely that Maguire will redshirt in his first season as a Seminole, head coach Jimbo Fisher couldn’t hide his excitement about adding the Sparta, N.J. native to the ‘Noles’ football roster.

“Very good arm. Played in a run-oriented offense,” Fisher said at his National Signing Day press conference. “Guy that can throw on the run. Athletic. Good guy. Tough guy. Plays with a chip on his shoulder. Natural leader. I love Sean Maguire. I think he’s going to be a heck of a player, I really do. I think he’s going to be a very good player; very competitive for what we do. I like him.”

Despite playing in a Wing-T offense for Seton Hall Preparatory School, FSU offensive coordinator James Coley said that when Maguire did get to throw the football “he was extremely accurate.”

His skill-set and his background in a run-first offense is much like redshirt freshman quarterback Jacob Coker, who enrolled at FSU last year after playing in a high school offense that didn’t pass all that often. But like Coker, Maguire has the athleticism, smarts and intangibles that Fisher covets in his quarterbacks.

Maguire is “just a guy who is charismatic and is a leader,” Coley said.

When the 6-foot-3, 200-pounder gets to Tallahassee, he will join a depth chart that already features incumbent starter EJ Manuel as well as backups Clint Trickett, Will Secord and Coker.

Add in the nation’s No. 1 quarterback recruit in Winston and Florida State is set up for an interesting spring in 2013 when all five quarterbacks will compete for the Manuel’s vacated starting job.

Number Watch: Maguire wore No. 15 in high school but that is the current jersey of junior wide receiver Greg Dent.
