Feb. 8, 2013

Next on the list of player breakdowns is Tyrell Lyons, who is one of five linebackers in FSU’s 2013 recruiting class.

Another prospect from talent-rich First Coast High School in Jacksonville, Fla., Lyons will join former high school teammate Reggie Northrup in the linebacker corps when he gets to campus this summer. Lyons’ addition helps bolster a depth chart that, including Northrup, has just six scholarship players on the roster for spring practices after the early enrollment of rookie Freddie Stevenson in January.

Lyons’ blend of athleticism and size will surely come in handy for new linebackers coach Charles Kelly.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound defender played safety in addition to linebacker in high school and has the talent to play in the secondary if need be in Tallahassee. Kelly has made a name for himself in part for his ability to produce linebackers with excellent coverage skills and Lyons should have the opportunity to flourish under his tutelage.

“Tyrell Lyons, he can play in space, can play on the edge, can run and use those coverage skills,” FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said.

Tyrell Lyons is one of several talented linebackers FSU signed this year.

Florida State lost both Nick Moody and Vince Williams to graduation so there is backup job at middle linebacker with Telvin Smith’s move to full-time starter and a starting gig at outside linebacker up for grabs when spring practice gets started. Depending on how the competition plays out with the current players, Lyons could earn immediate playing time once he starts practicing during fall camp in August.

Lyons publicly committed to the Seminoles Feb. 25, 2012 and stayed firm in that pledge for nearly a year despite a late push from Louisville and an official visit to South Carolina last month. Lyons’ took his official visit to Florida State Jan. 11 and his primary recruiter was ‘Noles wide receiver coach Lawrence Dawsey.
