GAINESVILLE, Fla. –
Florida State’s Macarena Silva shot a team leading 76 in the third round and finished as the Seminoles’ leader for the second consecutive tournament as play in the Lady Gator Women’s Golf Invitational at the University of Florida Golf Course came to a close on Tuesday. Silva earned her first top 15 finish of the season as the Seminoles completed regular season play and began setting their sights on the Atlantic Coast Conference Championship April 17-19 at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Auburn won the team championship as they defeated Duke on the first playoff hole. The Tigers and the Blue Devils finished tied in the team standings with identical scores of 913. Auburn began the final round in fourth place and made up eight strokes over the final 18 holes to pull into a tie with Duke. Duke’s Amanda Blumenherst gained the individual title despite carding a 77 in the final round. She defeated Molly Aronsson of Washington by two strokes to claim medalist honors.
Silva played the best round of the golf among her Seminole teammates as she closed the event with a six-over par 76. She finished in a tie for 13th place – her best placing since finishing in a tie for ninth place at the 2008 ACC Championship. Silva has finished with only two rounds above a 76 in her 11 rounds played this spring. She carded a 76-75 for a 151 total over the final two rounds of the tournament.
Freshman Whitney Wenglasz, who was tied for the lead after the first two rounds of play, finished in a tie for 29th place in the individual standings to earn the best finish of her career and the second consecutive top 50 placing. Wenglasz carded a career-best 70 in the second round – her score of 70 was tied for the best single-round score of the tournament.
Junior Lacey Agnew, who has played in a single-season career-high seven matches this year, finished in a tie for 53rd place in the individual standings. She carded a 73 in the second round which tied her career low score for a single round.
Florida State played the Lady Gator without three-time All-American Caroline Westrup who missed her second consecutive tournament because of an illness. She is expected to play in next week’s ACC Championship.
