Six Florida State Men’s Tennis Players Qualify in Same Week for USTA and ITF Pro Circuits

After ending the 2007 Florida State men’s tennis season with a No. 18 ranking, the Seminoles have been keeping busy playing in USTA professional circuits. Six men’s tennis players qualified in three different pro circuit tournaments including Rochester, New York, Shingle Springs, California and Guangzhou, China.

“This is the first time I can remember that six of our guys have qualified for a pro circuit in the same week,” Florida State head coach Dwayne Hultquist said.

In the 2007 Futures of Rochester, NY, graduating senior Ytai Abougzir (Boca Raton, Fla.), rising junior Maciek Sykut (Marathon, Fla.) and upcoming freshman Clint Bowles (Tampa, Fla.) all qualified for the circuit’s main draw on Monday, June 25. Abougzir fought through three matches to defeat American William Mertz 7-6(5), 6-2 to win a spot in the main draw. Sykut held a No. 6 seed in the qualifying draw earning a bye in round one. He later battled through two rounds of three-set matches to qualify after defeating Waylon Chin of the United States 4-6, 6-2 7-6 (1). Earning the No. 5 seed, Bowles charged through the qualifying bracket to win a main draw spot by downing Florida A&M’s Artiom Podgainii of Maldova 6-1, 6-3.

Abougzir and Bowles will also participate in the doubles main draw where they will first take on No. 1 seed Matthew Ebden (AUS) and Jose Statham (NZL). Teaming with Sykut will be rising sophomore Bradley Mixson (Miami, Fla.) in the doubles main draw after another qualifying team dropped out of the circuit. Round one of singles and doubles main draws will begin on Tuesday, June 26.

After traveling to the west coast, rising sophomore Jean-Yves Aubone (Miami, Fla.) qualified on Monday afternoon for the USA F14 Futures main draw in Shingle Springs, CA. Aubone earned a main draw spot after upsetting No. 8 qualifying seed Jeremiah Fuller of the United States 7-6 (6), 6-3. Round one of the main draw will take place Tuesday, June 26 where Aubone will take on No. 1 seed Ivan Miranda (PER). Visit the USTA Pro Circuit web site to view all match results.

Across the Pacific, rising senior Sam Chang (Young-Ming, Taiwan) earned a spot on the 2007 China F4 Futures in Guangzhou, China. Chang lost in the first round after falling to Hiu-Tung, Yu (HKG) in two straight sets 7-5, 6-4. Visit the ITF Pro Circuit web site to view all match results.
