Columbus, Ohio. – The Florida State women’s tennis duo of senior Nicola Slater (Ayr, Scotland) and freshman Lauren Macfarlane (Ogden, Utah) arrived in fashion at the 2006 Indoor National Championships in Columbus, Ohio. Today, November 2, the pair upset the No. 2 team in the nation.
In the first round of doubles competition, Slater and Macfarlane defeated Suzie Babos and Zsuzsanna Fodor of California, 8-6. The match was very intense with a lot of long games and long points.
“Nic and I are very excited,” stated Macfarlane. “It was a good confidence builder. It was a very intense match. The great thing about tomorrow’s match is that we know we can play better. It was really nice to get here a day and a half early. We played a practice match yesterday and it was good for us to get a few points in before the tournament.”
“I don’t think there are any words really,” said Slater. “I think the shaking and the smile from one ear to the other is basically all I can say right now. I think Lauren and I are working in the best possible way; not only on the court, but off the court. We’re just basically looking after one another and that is showing on the court as well. If I’m down, she does a great job of pumping me up. If she’s frustrated I pump her up. We are working the best way a doubles partnership would work.”
Tomorrow the doubles pair will face Notre Dame’s Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft in the quarterfinals at 9 a.m.
