Soccer Shuts Out Wright State

Oct. 10, 1999

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State soccer team extended its
home win streak to five with a 3-0 win over the Wright State Raiders
this afternoon. The Seminoles, who are on a four game win streak,
improve to 8-5 as the Raiders drop to 6-8.

“I’m excited for the team, getting win number eight,” Head Coach
Patrick Baker said. “We’ve topped last year’s seven wins and still have
six games left.”

Junior Ashley Halter started the scoring for the Seminoles when
she headed in an indirect kick from senior Angela Bonaffino at the 17
minute mark. Junior April Murphy added a goal off a cross from Marte Vik
Edvardsen at 28:58 to give the Seminoles a 2-0 lead at halftime. Murphy
and Vik Edvardsen traded roles in the second half with Murphy serving
and Vik Edvardsen finding the back of the net at the 54:00 mark. The
Seminole defense was able to hold off the Raiders as FSU recorded its
fifth shutout of the season. Goalkeepers Sarah Crawford and Jamie Gurtov
each had a save in the combined shutout.

“I wish we had played a little better today but I was very
pleased with the shutout,” Baker said. “We defended well and scored when
needed. After the South Alabama and Jacksonville games, I felt like we
needed this shutout. We plan on working extremely hard this week,
knowing we have two tough games this weekend with Virginia and Texas
A&M.”

Florida State has surpassed last year’s wins with today’s
victory and has six more games to play this season. The Seminole take to
the road this week as they head to Charlottesville, Va., to take on the
UVA Cavaliers on Friday, October 15 at 7pm. FSU will then head to
College Station, Texas on Sunday, October 17 to take on the Texas A&M
Aggies at 7pm.
