FRESNO, CA – The Florida State softball team went 0-2 in its first day of competition at the Hallowell Chevrolet Classic, hosted by Fresno State University. The Lady Seminoles fell to #3 UCLA 3-0 and Ole Miss 3-2.
UCLA scored first in game one off two singles to centerfield to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning. The Bruins then scored one in the 6th off a Lady Seminole error to give UCLA the 3-0 win. Junior Kelly Miller led FSU, going 1-2 as junior Rita Brooks and junior Staci Brandon each added a hit. Junior Robyn Gauger took the loss (1-1), striking out two batters and walking four. Junior Jen White-Stokes pitched the final inning and walked one batter.
Florida State and Ole Miss remained scoreless in game two until the 8th inning when pinch runner, senior Felicia Williams scored on an Ole Miss error and a hit from Brooks to give the Lady Seminoles a 2-0 lead. Ole Miss answered in the bottom of the 8th, scoring two runs off a triple and one off a single to win the game 3-2. Brandon, Edenfield and Brooks each had a hit with Leslie Malerich taking the loss (10-6), striking out nine and walking two.
The Lady Seminoles are 15-10 on the season and will continue in the Hallowell Classic on Saturday. FSU will face Cal-Poly at 11:00am and #7 Fresno State at 1:00pm. All games are Pacific Standard Time.
