Softball Gets One Victory Over Auburn

February 23, 1999

AUBURN, Ala. – The Florida State softball team improved to 6-5-1
on the season with a 4-2 victory over Auburn in 10 innings, but the second
game of the doubleheader was suspended in the fifth inning due to darkness
at 0-0.

Sophomore Jen White went the distance in game one, recording five
strikeouts in the 10-inning marathon. She improves to 3-2 with the win.
The Seminoles fell behind 2-0 after two innings, but came back to tie the
game with a run in both the third and fifth innings. It was the speed on
the basepaths that proved to be the difference for FSU. In the second
inning, Dana Bailey walked and stole second and scored on a single by
Corrie Williams, after being sacrificed to third by Christy Cerecedes. In
the fifth, it was much of the same as leadoff hitter Danielle Cox led off
with a walk, stole second and was sacrificed to third before scoring on a
groundout. The game was won in the top of the 10th inning when Latanya
Mitchell, who was placed on second base by the tie-breaker rule, scored on
a sacrifice fly by Cerecedes. Cox also scored in the inning after reaching
on a fielder’s choice. She scored on White’s single to right center.

Game two saw little offensive production for either team. Freshman
Leslie Malerich gave up just two hits in the five innings of play and
struck out one batter.

“I was happy to get the win tonight,” FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne
Graf said. “Auburn played very well, but I was pleased with the way our
team responded and came back for the win.”
