Softball Goes 3-1 In FAU Tournament

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Lady Seminole softball team dropped the first game of
the day to Villanova 1-0 in the 8th inning and dropped Furman 8-0 to finish
the FAU Tournament 3-1. Florida State is 14-4 on the season.

Senior Felicia Williams put the first runs on the board for FSU off a
single bunt, bringing in Andi Lyons in the 3rd inning. Junior Brandi Stuart
stole two bases and then scored on an error in the 4th to give the Lady
Seminoles the 2-0 lead. Villanova answered in the 6th, scoring two off a
double to centerfield to tie the game at 2-2 and taking the match-up into
extra innings. In the top of the 8th, Villanova scored on a double to
centerfield to give them the win. Pitcher Leslie Malerich took the loss,
going to 10-2 on the season with Jen White-Stokes giving up two runs and
striking out five.

The Lady Seminoles started game two scoring on a Paladin error to take the
1-0 lead in the first inning. Natalie Bennett then brought in Kimmy Carter,
who had a triple to start the inning, followed by Teresa Edenfield who drove
in Rita Brooks to give the Lady Seminoles a 3-0 lead after the 3rd inning.
Bennett then scored off a Paladin error in the 5th before the Lady Seminole
scored three in the 6th inning. Brooks drove in Jackie Hirschfeld, Stephanie
Elowsky hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Staci Brandon and
Bennett drove in Carter to give FSU a 7-0 lead. Kelly Miller added one more
run for the Lady Seminoles with a solo shot over the left field wall, her
second homerun of the season, to give FSU the 8-0 win. Brooks went 3-4 with
an RBI in the game with Carter going 2-3 with a triple. Pitcher Robin Gauger
pitched the shutout for her first win as a Lady Seminole.

Florida State heads to the NFCA Leadoff Classic next weekend, Friday, March
3-Sunday, March 5. The Lady Seminoles will take on Fresno State and Harvard
on Friday with a match-up with Texas on Saturday before bracket play begins
in Columbus, Ga.
