TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The Florida State University softball team will make its 24th appearance in the NCAA Championship by heading to the Athens, Ga., regional for the second consecutive season hosted by the No. 6 national seed Georgia Bulldogs.
The Seminoles (30-26) will first face the University of Alabama-Birmingham out of Conference USA on Friday. The Blazers (38-17) earned an at-large bid after posting one of the best seasons in school history.
Times for all the NCAA postseason games will be announced during the upcoming week. The Athens regional is scheduled from May 20-22.
Also in the Athens regional is Georgia State (36-23), which defeated Hofstra to win the Colonial Athletic Association title and earn an automatic bid.
FSU earned its automatic bid to the NCAA postseason after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference championship on Sunday afternoon. The Seminoles, seeded fourth in the conference tournament, defeated No. 2 seed North Carolina, 4-1, at Mewen Field in Atlanta to capture its 11th ACC Championship (10 sole titles, one shared).
The Seminoles’ bid into the 2011 NCAA Tournament is their 12th consecutive season of making the field of 64, breaking a school record. In NCAA regional play, FSU carries a 41-34 all-time record spanning back to its first NCAA regional in 1986. Since taking over at FSU in 2009, head coach Lonni Alameda has now taken the Seminoles to the NCAA postseason in all three years.
FSU softball’s postseason candidacy means that every athletic program at FSU has made the NCAA postseason in the last two years.
