TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today
the seedings for the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Softball tournament,
hosted by Florida State University. FSU will take the second seed in the
tournament with Maryland as the first seed after a blind draw for the
seeding. North Carolina will be the third seed followed by Virginia and
Florida State and Maryland were tied for the top spot as both teams
were 6-2 in the conference and split a double-header in March. After all
other possibilities were exhausted, a blind draw determined the top seed.
North Carolina and Virginia were tied at 4-4 and also were seeded according
to a blind draw. Georgia Tech went 0-8 in the conference.
The 1999 championships marks the eighth tournament for ACC softball
and only the third time FSU has been the second seed. The Lady Seminoles
were also seeded #2 in the 1996 and 1998 tournaments, defeating North
Carolina for the 1996 title and Virginia for the title last year. Florida
State was won five of the seven ACC Championships and shared the title with
Maryland in 1997 after a rain-out. Of the eight tournaments, Florida State
has been the top seed for six of the eight and has won three of the titles
as the top seed. FSU’s record in the ACC tournament stands at 20-5 and they
went 3-0 in the tournament in 1992, 1995 and 1998.
Florida State will take on the University of North Carolina on
Friday, May 14th at 5:00pm in the second game. Virginia and Georgia Tech
will play in game #1 at 3:00 on Friday with the winner of that game taking
on Maryland at 7:00pm. The schedule for Saturday will include games at
