Softball Selected to Los Angeles Regional

May 13, 2012

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The Florida State University softball team was selected to its 13th consecutive NCAA Regional late Sunday evening and is headed to Los Angeles, Calif., as part of No. 12 national seed UCLA’s four-team quadrant. The regional is slated to begin Friday, May 18.

FSU softball’s opening game versus San Diego State will begin at 6 p.m. ET/ 3 p.m. PT.

The Seminoles (46-14) will open NCAA postseason play by facing Mountain West Conference opponent and regular-season champion San Diego State (30-22). Also in the UCLA Regional is Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra (38-13) in addition to regional host UCLA (36-18).

The regional will be played at UCLA’s on-campus home venue in Easton Stadium. FSU has traveled to Los Angeles for an NCAA Regional in 2000, facing UCLA, Iowa and Long Beach State.

Coincidentally, it was FSU’s placement in Los Angeles in 2000 that began its unprecedented streak of 13 consecutive NCAA Regional bids. Since the millennium, FSU is one of just 11 collegiate softball programs who have made the postseason field of 64 in each season.

The Seminoles upcoming appearance in the 2012 NCAA Championship will also be their 25th overall, a mark that is tied for fifth nationally.

Historically, FSU is a combined 13-11 against its three regional opponents. The Seminoles are 1-8 all-time versus UCLA but did win the last matchup in the opening game of the 2002 Women’s College World Series on a game-winning home run by former player Monique Marier in the ninth inning. FSU is 1-1 versus San Diego State and 11-2 against Hofstra.
