Softball Sweeps Mercer

TALLAHASSE, Fla. – The Florida State softball team defeated Mercer this afternoon 7-0 and 7-4 in Macon, Ga. The Lady Seminoles are 7-3 on the season as the Lady Bears fall to 5-2.

“I was really pleased with our offensive production,” Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. “I felt like we hit the ball very well. We advanced the runners and were patient at the plate. I was real excited offensive performance as well. It was a good two games for us as we head into the weekend against Bethune-Cookman and Stetson.”

The Lady Seminoles struck early in game one when Natalie Bennett drove a two RBI single to left field, scoring Brandi Stuart and Rita Brooks. Stuart then drove in Stephanie Elowsky on an RBI single in the second inning to give FSU the 3-0 lead. Becky Wallace started the fifth inning scoring for FSU on an RBI single, followed by Staci Brandon’s two RBI single and Elowsky’s RBI to give the Lady Seminoles the 7-0 win. Brandon was 2-2 from the plate with two RBI’s and pitcher Jen White-Stokes earned the shutout with six strikeouts, giving up three hits and walking only one batter.

In game two of the afternoon, Teresa Edenfield drove in Brooks in the first inning, followed by Stuart’s RBI single in the second to give FSU a 2-0 lead. Bennett added a two-run RBI and Edenfield drove in a run on a double in the fourth inning, putting FSU ahead 5-0. Edenfield continued the scoring with a sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth inning with Andi Lyons scoring on a wild pitch in the seventh inning to put FSU ahead 7-0. Mercer came alive in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs off a double, single and an error but the Lady Seminoles held on to win 7-4. FSU’s Robin Gauger got the win, going four innings, striking out seven batters and giving up four hits. Brooks went 2-3 from the plate and had three stolen bases as Edenfield went 2-3 with three RBI’s.

Florida State will travel to Bethune-Cookman for a double-header on Saturday, February 19 beginning at 1:00pm. The Lady Seminoles will then take on Stetson in a double-header on Sunday, February 20 beginning at 1:00pm.
