TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State softball team did a sweep of the #18 Minnesota Golden Gophers tonight at the Seminole Softball Complex 5-0 and 5-2. The Lady Seminoles are 21-16-1 as the Golden Gophers fall to 20-7.
“It was a good win for us over a ranked opponent,” Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. “By scoring early we put some pressure on them. We are starting to play like ourselves again.”
The Lady Seminoles took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning of game one off a Minnesota error. Corrie Williams brought in Andi Lyons in the 3rd inning and Lyons brought in Cox on a double in the 4th and Christy Cerecedes added an RBI in the inning. Lyons then singled to bring in Cox in the 6th inning to score the final run of the game. Cox led the team, going 3-4 and adding two stolen bases. Lyons went 2-4 with a double and two RBI’s and Kimmy Carter was 2-3 from the plate. Jen White took the win, allowing only two hits and striking out seven batters.
The Golden Gophers held FSU until the 3rd inning in game two but Lyons opened the scoring with an RBI single that brought in Carter off a Minnesota error. Minnesota then had two errors in the inning to bring in three runs, giving the Lady Seminoles a 3-0 lead. FSU then scored two in the bottom of the 4th to clinch the win. Williams led the team in game two, going 2-3 with two doubles. Cerecedes also went 1-3 with an RBI. Leslie Malerich had the win for the Lady Seminoles, allowing five hits, two runs and striking out seven batters.
“Leslie’s change up was working well for her tonight,” Graf said. “She was getting ahead of batters early in the game but around the 5th inning she started to get behind the hitters. That’s when they started hitting off her but she did a good job hanging in the game and finishing it out.”
The Lady Seminoles will return to action on Wednesday, March 24 as they take on the Maryland Terrapins in an ACC match-up at the Seminole Softball Complex. The double-header begins at 5:30pm.
