TALLAHASSEE, Fla – The Florida State softball team swept Virginia tonight in a double-header at the Seminole Softball/Soccer Complex. The Lady Seminoles took the first game 8-2 and came from behind to win the second game 2-1.

“These were two big wins for us as they were our first conference games,” Head Coach JoAnne Graf said. ” This puts us closer to our main goals: to get an automatic bid to the NCAA and establish a high conference seeding.”

Danielle Cox scored the Lady Seminoles first run of game one off a single from Andi Lyons. FSU then scored two in the second inning off Jesse McGregor’s double to bring in the winning runs. Virginia scored one in the top of the 3rd and 4th innings but the Lady Seminoles took the win after scoring one run in each of the 4th and 5th innings and three runs in the 6th inning. Cox led the team, going 3-4 from the plate and adding three stolen bases. McGregor was perfect from the plate with a double and Jen White allowed only five hits and struck out six batters.

“We are playing real confident now and to get these two wins is a big lift for us,” Senior Danielle Cox said. ” We spaced out our hits and everyone in the lineup contributed.”

The Cavaliers took an early lead in game two, scoring the first run in the 4th inning but FSU took a 2-1 lead in the 5th off an RBI from Andi Lyons and a sacrifice bunt from Corrie Williams. Cox went 2-3 from the plate and had two stolen bases as McGregor and Dana Bailey were perfect from the plate. Bailey also added a stolen base. Stacy Venable pitched four innings and struck out three batters and Leslie Malerich took the win for the Lady Seminoles, pitching three innings and allowing only one hit.

“We played well and more importantly we played consistent for 14 innings,” Graf said. “UVA is a very good team so I am pleased with our effort.”

The Lady Seminoles improve to 19-16-1 as Virginia falls to 12-15. FSU will return to action on Monday, March 22 as they host Minnesota in a double header, beginning at 5:30pm at the Seminole Softball Complex.
