Softball Wins 3 on First Day of Tourney

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Freshman pitching ace Jennifer White led the Lady
Seminoles on the mound and at the plate as the No. 17th-ranked Florida
State softball team improved to 23-12 with three wins in the first day of
action at the Tallahassee Democrat Florida State Invitational.


FSU downed Northern Iowa 3-0, No. 16 Louisiana State 4-2 and Eastern
Michigan 4-2. White earned the latter two victories bringing her record to
17-7. She allowed just two earned runs in 12.2 innings pitched, struck out
five and walked three. At the plate, the Tuttle, Okla., native batted a
team-high .667 with four hits and tied teammate Danielle Cox with two RBIs.
Leadoff hitter Dana Bailey led the squad with five hits and batted .417.
Junior pitcher Stacy Venable started the day with a complete game shutout
over Northern Iowa. She improves to 5-4.


Action in the 24-team Tallahassee Democrat Florida State Invitational
continues tomorrow. Florida State will face Robert Morris at 11 a.m. at
Messer Field and Penn State at 3 p.m. at Lady Seminole Field. Playoffs
begin at 7:30 p..m. at Messer Field. Sunday’s action begins at 10 a.m. at
Lady Seminole Field. The championship contest is at 2 p.m.
