Softball’s Vasquez Named First ACC Player Of Week Of 2004

Feb. 9, 2004

Greensboro, NC –
Last season was a whirlwind for Florida State softball’s Elisa Vasquez. The junior was in her first season as the Tribe’s number one catcher and she burst on to the scene as she was named an All-American by both the NFCA and Easton. A year later, the California native is more accustomed to the recognition and that’s a good thing because after just four games she has already won another award. Vasquez was named the first ACC Player of the Week of 2004 after a dominating performance led No. 19 FSU to the Seminole Classic title.

“It is so exciting to start the season with an honor like this,” said Vasquez. “Awards are great and I am appreciative but I don’t worry about stuff like that. I am just here to help the team win any way that I can. Whatever I can do to help is enough of an award for me.”

Vasquez posted the fourth-best RBI season in FSU history last year and it doesn’t seem like much has changed in 2004. The catcher picked up right where she left off at the Seminole Classic Tournament as she led FSU on an undefeated run to the tournament title. The senior led the team in average (.500), runs (5), triples (1), home runs (1), RBIs (7), total bases (12), slugging (1.000) and struck out just one time in 12 at bats. She had multiple RBIs in three of the four games, extra base hits in three of the four games and she registered a hit in every game of the weekend. She was also perfect behind the plate fielding 1.000.

This is just the second-ever ACC Player of the Week award for Vasquez. Her first honor came April 28, 2003. Last season, FSU won the ACC’s weekly honor on six occasions.

The Seminoles return to action Wednesday in Macon, GA. The Tribe will face Mercer University in a doubleheader scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. The Seminole will be back at home this weekend for the Sunshine State Tournament featuring No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 22 South Carolina, 2003 NCAA Tournament team Illinois and southern powers Western Kentucky and Southern Miss.
