Greensboro, NC –
For the eighth time in 10 weeks an FSU softball player has been named the ACC’s Player of the Week. Seminole second baseman Veronica Wootson (Fontana, CA) was named ACC Player of the Week for the first time in her career and she is just the second freshman to receive the honor this year. The rookie continued her outstanding season as she had a hit and scored a run in all four of FSU’s wins last week including two home runs. She also helped the Tribe gain their 10th victory over a ranked team when Florida State beat No. 13 Florida in the middle of the week.
“This is so exciting and such an honor for me,” said Wootson. “Winning ACC Player if the Week was one of the goals I set for myself coming into the season. A lot of the credit for this goes to my teammates because this would never have happened without them.”
Freshman Veronica Wootson had a hand in the winning run in all four of FSU’s victories last week. The speedy freshman won both games versus UCF with home runs, one in the top of the ninth, and she scored the winning run in all four of FSU’s victories including a win over No. 13 Florida. Overall Wootson recorded a hit and scored a run in every game last week on top of slugging .875. Her two homers gave her five for the season and she has now tied the freshman record for home runs in a season. Wootson led FSU last week with seven runs scored, one triple, two home runs, five RBIs, 14 total bases and a .875 slugging percentage.
“It felt great to get those home runs. I was just glad I could help the team and step up at a time when we needed it and get a couple of wins over a tough UCF team,” said Wootson. “I have never been a home run hitter and have always relied on my feet more than my bat but it feels good to contribute to a team this good as a freshman and actually go after a freshman home run record.”
The Fontana, CA native started the week with three hits, three runs, two RBIs and a triple versus Florida A&M. Her first inning single led to her first run scored of the day, which was the game-winner in the 12-0 win. Against in-state rival and 13th ranked Florida, Wootson was the catalyst for the FSU offense again. She led off the first inning with a single and then once again came around with the game-winning run in FSU’s 10th win of the season over a top 25 team. Wootson’s hit streak looked like it was going to come to an end versus a UCF team that had won 15 straight games and had their ace on the hill. The Golden Knights held Wootson hitless until two outs in the top of the ninth when the freshman launched a solo homer over the 15-foot fence in left field winning the game 2-1 for FSU. Wootson then followed that performance with another homer off UCF in her second at bat of game two, this one a two-run shot. The blast once again came on a two-out pitch and put FSU up 3-0 in a game they held on to win 3-2.
