Solid Singles Group Returns From South Florida Women’s Tennis Invite

Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis team returned from the USF Invite in Tampa, FL this weekend with a solid singles corps after winning all seven matches on Saturday and five on Sunday.

In doubles action, junior Mihaela Moldovan and rookie Roxanne Clarke notched the only pairs victory of the weekend against Marie Lord-Andrade and Gabriela Duch from USF 8-6. Seniors Anca Dumitrescu and Christina Denny dropped a match 8-3 while juniors Daniella Gheorghe and Natalie Tirapelli lost to Obando/Romero 8-5.


In singles action, FSU won five of seven matches against South Florida. Dumitrescu defeated Gabriela Duch 6-4, 6-1. Playing at the No. 2 position, Moldovan defeated Marie Lord-Andrade 6-1, 7-5. Denny lost to Fabiana Taverna 6-3, 7-6(3) while Clarke bested Luisa Obando 3-6, 7-6(3), 6-4. At the No. 5 spot, Alina Mihailescu found success with a win over Patricia Kolendo 6-2, 6-3. Following suit, Gheorghe defeated Gina Craig 6-2, 6-1. In the last match, sophomore Amberly Tantee won over Yuri Kurashima 7-5, 6-3.


The Noles will return to action hosting the Lady Seminole Class, November 7-8, 2003.
