Oct. 6, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –
Sophomore Carrie Sordel led the Florida State women’s golf team with a five-over par 77 and junior Kristin Tamulis shot a six-over par 78 to lead the Seminoles at the Franklin Street Trust/Tar Heel Invitational today at the Finley Golf Course. Sordel improved her single round score a team-leading nine strokes while Tamulis improved by five strokes from the first to the second rounds. In the team standings, the Seminoles are in a tie for 10th-place heading into Sunday’s third and final round.

Sordel’s (Windermere, Fla.) score was the second best of the tournament for the Seminoles. She improved from a 14-over par 86 in round shot a five-over par 77 in round two. Sordel’s score of 77 in Saturday’s second round was her second best of the fall season and the second time she had shot 77 or better in the last three tournaments.

Tamulis (Naples, Fla.) also improved her score dramatically as she gained five strokes. Tamulis has recent history on her side as she begins Sunday’s third round – her best rounds this fall have come in the final round of her first two tournaments. She shot an even par 72 at the Mason Rudolph Championship and a 76 at last week’s ACC/SEC Shootout in Destin, Fla.

Senior Alison Zimmer (Tallahassee), who was the tournaments individual leader after the first round, shot an uncharacteristic 87 in the second round. She fell from her first place position into a tie for 32nd-place. Her two-round total of 158 is her fourth best score for 36-holes during her collegiate career. Zimmer’s best two-round score is a 153 at the 2000 Lady Paladin Fall Invitational. She finished in a tie-for 27th in that event.

Duke maintained its team lead and takes an eight-stroke lead over North Carolina into the third round. The Blue Devils, who finished second at last years NCAA Championship, are led by a pair of golfers who are tied for third and another who is tied for 10th. Nicki Cutler and Meredith Ward of Vanderbilt are currently in first and second place in the individual standings. Cutler, with a three-over par 147, leads Ward by one stroke.

Sunday’s final round – a shotgun start – begins at 9 a.m.
