TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team lost a close match to the Jaguars of the University of South Alabama Saturday afternoon. The Seminoles and Jaguars entered the contest ranked 37th and 38th, respectively. The Jaguars took the doubles point and three singles points to edge the Seminoles, 4-3.
In doubles action, freshman Lauren Walker and senior Jessica Balbuena defeated Josien Boverhof and Nienke Scheltens of South Alabama, 8-5, at the no. 1 doubles position. However, the Jaguars won at no. 2 and no. 3 doubles to head into singles play with the one point advantage.
At the no. 1 singles position, no. 42 Anca Dumitrescu won her match easily (6-1, 6-2) over South Alabama’s Silvia Sosnarova. At no. 4 and no. 5 singles, senior Alida Gallovits and Walker each won the first set of their matches 6-1. In both matches though, their opponent fought hard in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker to decide the set. Gallovits won her tiebreak, while Walker lost hers, forcing her to play a third set. Walker eventually won the no. 5 singles match over Katarina Palenikova, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2. The Jaguars won at the no. 2, no. 3 and no. 6 singles positions to take the match.
The Seminoles return to action Sunday, February 24th, at the University of Alabama. The Crimson Tide enters the contest ranked 24th and boast a record of 7-1 on the season. The Seminoles will be looking to take their first win over a ranked opponent since defeating no. 32 LSU on February 9th.
