Oct. 28, 2005

DESTIN, Fla. –
South Carolina shot a 297-team score and holds a four-stroke lead over Alabama after the first round of the Chrysler Women’s Golf Challenge at the Raven Course at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The Gamecock’s Jenna Pearson shot a one-under par 70 and is in first place in the individual standings. Pearson holds a two-stroke lead over a group of three players heading into Saturday’s second round. The event is being played at the Raven Course at the Sandestin Beach and Golf Resort.

The first round of the 54-holes, three-day, three-round event was played on a beautifully clear and crisp day – considered to be perfect conditions by many of the golfers who are competing in the tournament.

Pearson and Erica Battle led South Carolina as the Gamecocks placed two members of their starting five in the top seven of the individual standings. Pearson shot 37 on the front nine and a stellar 33 on the back nine. Battle, who is in a tie for seventh place with a three-over par score of 74, shot 38 on the front and 36 on the back to move into contention for individual honors. South Carolina’s Whitney Simons is in a tie for 12th place after shooting a four-over par 75.

Alabama was led by Jenny Suh and Audrey Gale who both finished the first round in a tie for second place with identical even par scores of 72. Carina Sorensen, who is in a tie for 17th place, is the next highest ranking Alabama player. Fellow SEC member Mississippi State is in third place in the team standings. The Bulldogs were led by Amanda Mathis who is in a tie for second in the individual standings after carding a one-over par 72.

The second round of the event – a shotgun start – begins at 8 a.m. central time Saturday morning. The final round is slated for a shotgun start Sunday at 8 a.m.
