TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) –
Florida State Director of Athletics Randy Spetman has announced four promotions within the department following the Seminoles’ second consecutive top 10 national finish in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings: Jason Pappas has been elevated to Associate Director of Athletics for Student-Athlete Academic Services and Brandi Stuart has been elevated to Associate Director of Athletics for Student Services while Dr. John Lata has been elevated to Assistant Director of Athletics for Student Services and Ryan Pensy to Assistant Director of Athletics for Digital Media.

“We have an amazingly talented group of people working in our department,” said Spetman. “Every member of our staff does such an incredible job in what they do and they all are a driving force behind the success of our student-athletes on the playing fields and courts. Not only are we incredibly proud of our student-athletes and what they accomplish in their athletic endeavors but we are incredibly proud of what every member of our staff does to help propel our young people to compete at the highest levels both in the classroom and on their chosen fields of play.”

Pappas is in his first year as a member of the athletic staff and has helped the Seminoles’ student-athletes reach new heights in the classroom. A total of 126 student-athletes earned Dean’s List honors and 228 earned grade point averages over 3.0 with nine teams earning cumulative GPA’s of 3.0 or better during his first semester on the job in the spring of 2011. Pappas earned both his undergraduate (1996 in business communications) and master’s degrees (1998 in sport administration) from Florida State.

Stuart, a two-time All-American as a Seminole softball player, is in her fourth year as the head of the Student Services department. Under Stuart’s guidance, the unit has worked to ensure that each of the Seminoles’ nearly 600 student-athletes gain the knowledge and tools to become successful members of the FSU community. Stuart earned her bachelor’s degree in communications from Florida State in 2003.

Lata moves up from director of student services where he works directly with the 45 member Student Athlete Advisor Council which is a leadership group made up of members of each of the Seminoles’ 19 different athletic teams. The SAAC is responsible for peer programming and is a conduit between their teammates and the administration. Lata takes the lead on the production of the Seminoles’ annual all-sports award banquet and is the sport oversight for baseball. Lata earned his Ph.D. in sport administration from Florida State in 2006.

Pensy joined the Seminoles’ staff since 2003 and has been the driving force behind the department’s explosion into the digital and social media worlds. He was named Florida State’s first ever director of digital media in 2005 and is the editor of Seminoles.com, is responsible for managing online partner relationships as well as creating new online revenue opportunities. Pensy earned his master’s degree in sport administration from Florida State in 2003.

The Seminoles finished in ninth place in the overall Directors’ Cup standings in 2011 after finishing in a school best fifth place in 2010. Florida State is the only university in the nation that has sent each of its teams (100 percent) to their respective NCAA postseason tournaments in both of the last two seasons.
