TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Senior catcher Jeremiah Klosterman’s three-run homer in the first inning was the highlight of Florida State’s (3-0) seven-run rally in a 11-3 victory over UNC Asheville (0-3) at Dick Howser Stadium.
UNC Asheville righthander Eddie Woods (0-1) walked FSU’s first three batters and three wild pitches enabling centerfield Karl Jernigan to score giving the Seminoles a 1-0 lead. An error by second baseman Jason Ronai and sacrifice by first baseman Kevin Cash added two more runs before Klosteman’s home run. Jernigan added an RBI-single in his second plate appearance of the night to make the score 7-0 at the end of the first inning.
Lefthander Blair Varnes (1-0) retired the first 10 batters as he held UNC Asheville to one run on four hits. Varnes struck out four batters in six innings of work in his first collegiate appearance.
Third baseman Marshall McDougall scored three runs and belted three hits, including an RBI-double in the seventh inning. Freshman leftfielder Mike Futrell and catcher Chris Hart each contributed a pair of hits to the Seminole campaign.
Florida State will host No. 12 Arizona State next weekend. The series begins on Friday, February 5th at 3:30 p.m. The Sun Devils have posted an 11-0 record thus far this season.
