TALLAHASSEE, FL — Freshman centerfielder Karl Jernigan belted three
hits, including his first career home run, as he led No. 25 Florida State
(9-6) to a 9-6 win over The Citadel (3-5).
Right-hander John Bentley (2-0) held the Bulldogs to four runs seven hits
and struck out three batters in the eight-inning outing. Bentley did not
surrender a walk and allowed only three earned runs in his second win of
the season. He retired nine straight batters in the fifth through seventh
Trailing 1-0, Jernigan drove in designated hitter Matt Diaz with a
two-run shot to centerfield in the second inning to give Florida State a
3-1 lead. Diaz had reached base on an RBI-double.
The Citadel tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning, but
rightfielder Brian Cox blasted a solo shot over the rightfield wall to give
FSU a 4-3 lead that it would not relinquish.
Freshman shortstop contributed a pair of RBI-basehits in the fourth and
eighth innings, while third baseman Jose Zabala drove in two runs on a
sacrifice fly and a double.
Left-hander Rodney Hancock (0-1) gave up seven runs on eight hits and one
walk in four innings pitched in his first career start. Hancock struck out
three in the outing.
Bulldogs’ leftfielder Chris Morris knocked in two runs on one hit and
centerfielder Jerry Simmons belted a pair of hits.
