Seminoles Cruise to 84-71 Victory over UNC

James Collins scored 22 points to lead a balanced attack as
Florida State upended 19th-ranked North Carolina, 84-71, in an
Atlantic Coast Conference game.

Kerry Thompson and Corey Louis added 15 apiece for the Seminoles
(11-4, 2-4 ACC), who defeated North Carolina for just the fifth
time in 24 all-time meetings between the schools. Florida
State, which is 2-2 at home against ACC rivals, improved to 6-0
when scoring 80 or more points.

Shammond Williams scored 25 points and Vince Carter added 19 for
North Carolina (11-5, 2-4), which is off to its worst conference
start in school history.

The Seminoles, who trailed only at 2-0 and 4-2, led by as many
as 13 points in the first half, but North Carolina used a 13-4
run to pull within 65-63 on two free throws by Antawn Jamison
with 7:02 remaining.

The Tar Heels last made it a two-point game at 71-69 following a
tip-in by Carter with 3:41 remaining, but Florida State closed
the game with a 13-2 run.

Ron Hale hit a jumper and Randell Jackson added a dunk to make
it 75-69 with 2:28 to go. The Tar Heels called a 20-second
timeout, but Jackson had a layup at the 1:38 mark to make it
77-69.

Ed Cota had a jumper for North Carolina, but LaMarr Greer made a
free throw and Collins had a steal and dunk to make it 80-71.
Thompson and Louis made two free throws apiece in the final 26
seconds.

A jumper by Jamison pulled North Carolina within 25-22 with 9:31
remaining in the first half, but the Seminoles went on a 15-5
spurt, keyed by two three-pointers from Collins, who hit a
three-pointer with 3:44 left to make it 40-27.

Florida State shot 50 percent (33-of-66) from the field and
Thompson dished out 10 assists. Jackson added 10 points for the
Seminoles, who outscored North Carolina from the foul line,
12-6.

Jamison, who is 17th in the nation in scoring at 21.7 points per
game, was held to almost half his average at 11 points. The Tar
Heels shot just 38 percent from the floor in the second half and
45 percent (29-of-65) overall. North Carolina’s bench was
outscored 19-6, with all of the Tar Heels bench points coming
from Cota.
