FSU’s Thompson Beats Buzzer, Clemson

Kerry Thompson’s 12-foot follow of his own miss as time expired
lifted Florida State to a stunning 67-65 Atlantic Coast
Conference victory at eighth-ranked Clemson.

The Seminoles (15-9, 5-9 ACC) kept alive their flickering NCAA
Tournament hopes with the victory, winning for the first time in
seven conference road games. Florida State also avenged a 76-70
loss to the Tigers on January 11th.

Harold Jamison lifted Clemson (20-7, 8-6) into a 65-65 tie by
making two free throws with 16 seconds left. After each team
called timeout, Thompson took the inbounds pass and the Tigers
backed off to play halfcourt defense.

Thompson worked the clock down before taking a three-point shot
from the top of the key. The shot bounced off the rim and out
to the right elbow, where Thompson banked the shot in off the
glass as the horn sounded.

James Collins scored 17 points and Kirk Luchman added 16 for the
Seminoles, who blew a five-point lead in the final minute.

Greg Buckner scored 20 points and Merl Code added 12 for
Clemson, which has lost consecutive games and three of its last
four. The Tigers are 5-2 at home in ACC play.

Florida State leads the all-time series, 14-10. Seven of the
last eight games have been decided by eight points or less.

The Tigers took a 52-47 lead after Vincent Whitt made a
three-pointer to cap a 10-0 run. But Florida State charged back
with seven consecutive points as James Collins hit a
three-pointer, Devonaire Deas made a spin move that led to a
12-footer and Collins made two free throws to give the Seminoles
a 54-52 edge.

The Seminoles took a five-point lead down the stretch on two
separate occasions, the last time at 64-59 after Luchman scored
from inside with 55 seconds to play.

Merl Code hit two free throws less than five seconds later and
after Collins missed the front end of a 1-and-1, Terell McIntyre
drove the lane and scored to pull Clemson within 64-63 with 37.5
seconds left.

Collins was quickly fouled and made the first of two free throws
to push the lead to 65-63. Jamison drove the right baseline and
was fouled by Randell Jackson. He made both free throws to tie
the game, setting up Thompson’s dramatics.

Geoff Brower hit a pair of three-pointers to key a 10-3
first-half run as Florida State took a 23-16 lead with 7:34 left
after two free throws by Luchman. But Clemson held the
Seminoles to one basket and four points the rest of the half and
cut the deficit to 27-26 by halftime.

Florida State shot 52 percent (24-of-46) from the field and
committed just 11 turnovers. Thompson finished with 15 points
for the Seminoles, who shot 7-of-19 from three-point range.

Iker Iturbe added 11 points for Clemson, which made 10-of-16
shots in the second half and 48 percent (19-of-40) overall. The
Tigers enjoyed a 22-12 edge at the foul line.
