Wednesday’s FSU football practice was spent almost exclusively working versus Wake Forest scout teams. That is not that unusual for a Wednesday but for the first time this season the coaches were able to work against an opponent they were familiar with. The Demon Deacons have won two straight games versus Florida State and are one of the favorites to win the ACC’s Atlantic Division.

PRACTICE NOTES

  • FSU spent 21 periods working in uppers on the practice fields.
  • In skeleton Jamie Robinson and Roosevelt Lawson had pass break-ups. Christian Ponder completed three passes to Rod Owens and then hit Preston Parker for a TD. D’Vontrey Richardson hit Bert Reed three times one of which was for a big gain and another was for a TD. Richardson also found Cameron Wade for a touchdown.
  • In pass rush Antwane Greenlee was the only multiple winner for the offensive line. Rodney Hudson, Ryan McMahon, Zebrie Sanders, Rhonne Sanderson, Andrew Datko and Joe Tonga all had a win though. Kevin McNeil, Markus White, Neefy Moffett and Budd Thacker each had two sacks while Paul Griffin also got to the QB.
  • In 11-on-11 White had a QB pressure and Toddrick Verdell broke up a pass over the middle. Ponder connected with Surrency and Richardson had connections with Wade, Louis Givens and Reed.
  • Practice finished off in the 1:00 drill. Ponder found Greg Carr but a pressure by Everette Brown and a sack by Verdell ended the first drive. The offense, behind Richardson got into the endzone on the second drive. Richardson guided the team down the field with passes to Givens, two to Parker and then a TD pass to Wade. The third drive was all defense as Verdell had a QB pressure and then Tony Carter intercepted a Hail Mary to end the practice.

For the offense Andrew Datko and David Spurlock had two wins a piece. Rhonne Sanderson, Ryan McMahon, Joe Tonga and Rodney Hudson also held off their men.
  • In 11-on-11 Darius McClure, Jamie Robinson and Moffett all had a tackle for loss. Ponder had a connection to Owens and Weatherford found Reed and Givens. Seddrick Holloway had two big runs and Jermaine Thomas and Ponder had nice runs as well.
  • The defense dominated goal line holding the offense without a score. Holloway gained two yards from the three on the first try. On the next play from the one the offense jumped offsides. On the third play from the three there was an incomplete pass and the final play from the one was a stuff by the defense on a Joe Surratt plunge.
