Fiesta Bowl Running Backs Comparison

It seems that most everyone thinks the Fiesta Bowl will be won or lost by the plays made by the quarterbacks, receivers and defenses. Although these are definitely keys to the game, the running games of each of the respective teams should not be underestimated. Both the Seminoles and Volunteers have the ability to make game-breaking plays with their running games.

In Travis Minor and Jeff Chaney, FSU has shown that they can get it done on the ground. Add the lighting quick speed of Laveranues Coles to the mix and the ‘Noles backfield is a definite threat. Their ability to establish a running game might just be the difference in the game as it will allow quaterback Marcus Outzen to perform under a lot less pressure.

Tennessee, who is without the duties of the injured Jamal Lewis, will be led by Travis Henry, who averaged 5.5 yards per carry in 1998, and Travis Stephens.

Tennesse Running Game Might be a Key to Victory

Quoting the Teams

Florida State

Head coach Bobby Bowden

  • On the importance of a strong running game:
“It’s very important because we need to take the pressure off Marcus Outzen. It’s more important for us than Tennessee to establish a running game becasue of our new quarterback. Tennessee is an excellent pass rushing defense, so the running game is very importat to us.”

    Tennessee

    Tailback Travis Henry

  • On the ability to run the ball successfully against FSU:
“I’m going into the game thinking that I will be able to run the ball, that is what this team has to do to win games. If our O-line blocks for us, we’ll have a good night.”

  • On the UT O-line vs. the FSU D-line:
“That is going to be a very physical matchup. They have four great tackles, so it’s going to be a great test for our offensive line and for our backs too.”

    Fullback Shawn Bryson

  • On what his focus has been since he’s bee in Tempe:
“We know what we came here to do. We came here for one thing and we won’t let anything distract us. We’re going to have to come out there and hit them right in hte mouth.”
