TALLAHASSEE, Fl. — The Florida State football team continued two-a-day
practices, with an 8:30 a.m. morning session and a 4:30 p.m. afternoon
session today. The Seminoles practiced in shorts and will put on the pads
for the first time on Monday.
In the hot and sunny early practice (24 periods), the defense had a pair
of interceptions in skeleton work (no offensive or defensive lines).
Shevin Smith picked off a Dan Kendra pass and Coronta Cody intercepted
Chris Weinke on back-to-back plays.
“I see a real prospect in Cody,” said Coach Bobby Bowden. “He’s caught
my eye several times. It looks like he’s got the stuff to play corner
Temperatures were held down during the afternoon session as clouds
covered the FSU practice fields. The Seminoles were able to get all 18
periods in before lighting and the threat of rain caused Coach Bowden to
call off agilities normally held at the end of practice.
“We knocked off the conditioning at the end,” said Bowden. “We will try
to make up for it tomorrow since its Saturday and they have Sunday off.”
It was the offense’s turn in the later practice as several receivers
recorded some big plays in the skeleton work. Ron Dugans made two
outstanding catches, using his team-leading 43″ vertical leap, pulled down
long yardage passes from Chris Weinke and Dan Kendra.
“Dugans might be the most consistent receiver out there,” said Bowden.
“He made some excellent catches today.”
The Seminoles will practice tomorrow at the same times before media and
fan appreciation day on Sunday.
