BALTIMORE, MD – Florida State men’s tennis player Yvo Niks, a junior
from Holland, won two matches Sunday afternoon to advance to the
quarterfinals of the pre-qualifying tournament of the ITA National
Claycourt Championships at the Suburban Club. Niks defeated ACC-rival John
Winter of Virginia in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 late Saturday and then
defeated Mark Loughrin of Wisconsin 6-3, 6-1 and Alabama’s Karim Zahir 6-2,
7-5 on Sunday. He will face Texas Christian’s Esteban Carril in the
FSU’s Michael Ingham had a successful tournament but lost in the fourth
round to Piotr Baranowski of Winthrop 6-0, 6-0. He earlier defeated Jason
Moon of American 6-1, 6-0 and ACC-foe Hyon Yoo of Virginia 6-2, 6-4.
The top winners of the 120-player pre-qualifying tournament advance to
the 64-player qualifying tournament that takes place this week. The top
winners of the qualifying rounds advance to the main draw of players, where
an actual champion is determined. FSU’s Ty Braswell, ranked No. 81 in the
preseason polls, is an entry in the secondary tournament.
