Florida State Opens Season with Victory

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Sophomore Latavia Coleman and freshman Brooke
Wyckoff recorded double-doubles to lead Florida State to a 79-70 victory
over Florida A&M (1-1) this afternoon in the season-opener for the
Seminoles. Coleman tallied a career-high 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds
while the rookie Wyckoff scored 17 points and snagged a game-high 15
boards.

“I was really, really proud of the team today,” FSU first-year coach
Sue Semrau said. “They are with their third coach in three years and I
think that they have responded favorably early. Overall, I was just really
proud of our effort.”

Wyckoff, of West Chester, Ohio, had just two points at the break as
Florida State led 39-35, but went on to score 12 of FSU’s first 18 points
of the second half, all consecutively, on her way to the double-double.

“She’s unbelievable,” Semrau said of Wyckoff. “Here she is a freshman
starting in a starting role and she only plays well, but has had a
double-double in our last two contests.”

Florida State’s largest lead of the night was 13 twice in the second
half. Trailing 69-56 with 5:22 to play, FAMU scored 11 straight points to
pull within a bucket at 69-67. The Seminoles, however, ran off 10 of the
game’s final 13 points for the nine-point victory.

FSU will travel to Gainesville to participate in the Dial Soap/Florida
Four Challenge at Florida. FSU will play the Lady Gators at 7 p.m. on
Thursday, Nov. 20th and play either Miami or South Florida at 4:30 p.m. on
Friday.
