Florida State Falls to SMSU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Freshman guard Jackie Stiles had 24 points and eight
rebounds to lead No. 22 Southwest Missouri State to a 68-57 win over Florida State on
Sunday.

Southwest Missouri State (8-0) also got 12 points from senior forward Lisa Davies and
10 from junior guard Jamie Bartlett.

Freshman forward Brooke Wyckoff had 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead Florida State
(4-7).

The game was a defensive struggle throughout. Southwest Missouri State had 28
turnovers and shot 31.5 percent from the field. Florida State had 29 turnovers and shot
28.8 percent.

Lady Bear Coach Cheryl Burnett feared a letdown after SMS beat Arkansas and Illinois
to attain its first ranking of the season.

“We knew after getting so much attention from our last two wins that we would be the
team to beat,” Burnett said.

Southwest Missouri State took a 29-26 halftime lead and never relinquished the lead in
the second half.

A jumper by FSU’s Arleshia Davidson cut SMS’s lead to 31-30 with 16:58 remaining,
but the Lady Bears went on a 6-0 run to make it 37-30.

A pair of free throws by Wyckoff cut the deficit to 39-36 with 12:18 left, but an 8-2
SMS run pushed the lead back to 47-38. Stiles converted a 3-point play and made a
3-point field goal to key the run.

The Lady Seminoles cut the lead to five points on six occasions in the last 10 minutes,
but couldn’t get any closer.

FSU got within five for the last time with 1:03 remaining. A jumper by Latavia Coleman
made it 62-57 but the Lady Seminoles never scored again.

SMS made its last six free throws to put the game away.
