WINSTON-SALEM, NC — Despite scoring the first goal, Florida State (0-1,
0-1 in the ACC) dropped a narrow 2-1 decision to Atlantic Coast Conference
rival Wake Forest (1-0, 1-0 in the ACC) in both team’s season opener at
Spry Soccer Stadium.
The Seminole jumped on the scoreboard first, as Erin Grimsley found the
back of the net with a header off of a pass from Alex Osorio.
Wake Forest scored their first goal when Ann Shropshire took a lead pass
from Jesses Snyder and put it past FSU goalkeeper Melissa Juhl at the 20:22
mark. The Deacons took the lead for good when Karli Schilling tipped in a
corner kick from Shropshire 32:11 into the first half.
Both teams were scoreless in the second half.
Three Seminoles were yellow carded in a very defensive game. Both
keepers had eight saves apiece, while the Deacons outshot FSU 17-9. Janna
Walkup and two freshmen Ashley Halter and Dee Foard received warnings.
FSU next travels to Appalachian State for a Sunday match up.
