Softball News from NCAA Tournament

Notes and quotes from coaches and players.

May 15, 1998

Game One: Oklahoma State 4, Florida State 0

Florida State Quotes

FSU Coach JoAnne Graf
(Pressure on Venable coming home)
“I knew she would be excited. But she got through the first couple of
innings and got out of some jams. I think she relaxed a little bit. We
worry a little bit when kids come home. They want to do really well, and
sometimes they tend to overthrow. They (the Cowgirls) had that one good
inning, but other than that, I thought she threw very well.”

(On Markert’s no-hitter)
“When you get no hit, you’re not going to win many games. I think you have
to credit (Jenn) Markert. She really kept us off balance. We didn’t put any
pressure on their defense at all.”

FSU Pitcher Stacy Venable
(On coming home to Oklahoma)
“I wasn’t thinking about it. But I guess I was a little bit uptight. I
wasn’t thinking about being here and other things, but I guess naturally
it’s always in the back of your mind.”

(On facing OSU’s Casey Acree)
“She’s my best friend. I know what to throw her and what not to throw her.
Later on I did that illegal pitch, and that was stupid.”

Florida State Notes

* FSU now owns an 18-14 record in 12 NCAA Regional appearances. The
Seminoles’ last appearance in the College World Series was in 1993.

* In the 1993 South Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., the Seminoles lost
their opening game to Kansas but came back to win three straight to advance
to the College World Series.

* The Seminoles will play Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against the loser of
the Stanford-Southwest Missouri State game.

* Jen White will pitch tomorrow. She has not pitched since March 28
because of injury. At that time, she was leading the country in wins with a
26-7 record.

Oklahoma State Quotes

OSU Associate Head Coach Margaret Rebenar

(On the game)
“When you have an exhibition like this where all of the phases of the game
are working from the pitching to the offense to the defense where
everybody’s on, you’re going to score some runs. Keeping them off thebases
keeps a lot of pressure off.”

(On Coach Fischer being gone)
“It (the back problem) happened last night, and it was pretty evident she
wouldn’t make it today if not at all this weekend. It’s still up in the
air.”

OSU Pitcher Jenn Markert
(On the no-hitter)
“They (the players) kept quiet about it, but it was in theback of my mind.
But I couldn’t have done it without my catcher, Liz Silva. The energy level
was really good.”

OSU Center-fielder Casey Acree
(On playing against Venable)
“You have to separate your friendship from the ball. You’re best friends
off the field, but once you hit the dirt, you have to separate that. I felt
pretty comfortable against her, but in the back of my mind, I felt glad we
were hitting her pretty well. But otherwise she did well.”

Oklahoma State Notes

* OSU pitcher Jenn Markert threw the second no-hitter of her OSU
career. The first came March 7, 1997, against Temple in a 6-0 Cowgirls
victory. Markert’s no-hitter against Temple last season was also OSU’s last
no-hit effort.

* OSU is now 21-14 in NCAA Regional play, including victories in the
Cowgirls’ last 10 opening regional games.

* The Cowgirls will play Saturday at noon against the
Stanford-Southwest Missouri State winner.
